Test Your Air Conditioner Before It Gets Hot

The first day of spring is almost here and now is a good time to test your air conditioner before it gets too hot. My Father’s Mechanical is going to list the steps to take to test your air conditioner below. If anything goes wrong during the test, give us a call so we can come out and inspect the unit to determine what needs to be done to repair it. Once we have your approval, we will repair it so you remain cool and comfortable during the hot San Antonio summer.

Close the Windows

Close all the windows and the front and back doors if you have them open. You want to make sure the only airflow that you are feeling is the airflow that is coming out of the vents. This also helps to control the temperature inside so that when you set the thermostat, it is only relying on the indoor air. Outdoor air can affect the thermostat and its functionality by changing the temperature erratically inside.

Flip the Switch to AC

Had to your thermostat and flip the switch from Heat to Cool. This will tell your HVAC unit that you want the air conditioner to run instead of the heater. If you have a digital thermostat, select the Cool option two, again, let your HVAC system know that you plan to run the air conditioner.

Set the Thermostat

It’s winter right now, so you may need to set the thermostat at a very low temperature to get the air conditioner to turn on. Check the temperature reading on the thermostat to know what the temperature is indoors. Set the thermostat for a temperature that is lower than the indoor temperature. This will prompt the air conditioner to turn on to cool off the indoor air.

Listen for Sounds

Listen for the normal sounds that you hear when the thermostat turns on the air conditioner. You may hear a clicking sound first and then the sound of the air conditioner running. If you hear any strange sounds such as squealing or grinding, shut the HVAC unit off immediately at the thermostat to prevent it from running. Those noises indicate there is something wrong.

Check Each Vent

If everything sounds okay, check each event in your house for airflow. Also, note the temperature of the air flowing through the vents. The air should be cold because the air conditioner is on and the airflow should be relatively strong. If it is not, there is a problem with the AC or the duct system.
